Reuben cooking steak on Seven Sharp
The mighty Tomahawk steak has been making waves on social media lately - it looks impressive, it’s photogenic and it’s a guaranteed showstopper when it hits the barbecue. But is it really worth the hype? That’s the question Seven Sharp’s Ben Hurley put to our very own Reuben in a recent episode.
In the segment, Reuben breaks down exactly what a Tomahawk is and shares his expert tips for cooking it to perfection. Plus, he gives his honest opinion on whether it’s the best value cut for your money. (Spoiler: he reckons there’s another cut that’s a better everyday option.) And of course, Molly the dog makes a special appearance, stealing a bit of the spotlight as only she can!
If you missed it on TV, you can watch the full clip from Seven Sharp here.
What is a Tomahawk steak?
The Tomahawk comes off the forequarter of the cow, from the rib section that runs down to the scotch fillet. In other words, it’s a scotch fillet still attached to the bone. It’s big, bold and dramatic on the plate.
Reuben’s tips for cooking any good steak:
- Not everyone can splash out on a Tomahawk. Reuben’s pick for the best value cut is rump steak. It’s a little tougher, but packed with flavour.
- Bring your steak to room temperature before cooking.
- Oil your steak and season well. Reuben recommends Rum & Que’s Bull Dust for a punchy flavour boost (available in store).
- Always rest your steak after cooking. This lets the muscles relax and reabsorb moisture, keeping it juicy.
- Bonus tip: cooking over a charcoal barbecue adds an unbeatable depth of flavour.
